17 November 2008 To: Customers, Vendors, Associations and News Agencies Re: Merger/Change in Facility and Location
Charlotte, NC - Commander Instruments and Avionics, Inc., an aircraft instrument and electronics sales and service company announced today that they are merging operations with American Dornier of Charlotte, NC. American Dornier is a division of Lindauer Dornier GmbH headquartered in Lindau, Germany, a manufacturer of machinery for the textile and film industry with a rich family history in aircraft manufacturing. Commander will be relocating its component services facility from the Charlotte/Douglas International Airport to 4101 Performance Road in Charlotte integrating with American Dornier. Construction has already begun on a new 10,000 sq. ft. addition to American Dornier’s existing 40000 sq. ft. facility.
Commander also announced that it is in the pre-certification phase with the Federal Aviation Administration for their Concord Regional Airport facility located at 9202 Aviation Blvd. Suite EW1. The airport location will become a satellite operation providing aircraft systems technical support, certification, and STC development.
About Dornier: Headquartered in Lindau, Germany on Lake Constance since 1950, Lindauer Dornier administers sales and production as well as textile and specialty machinery development and manufacturing. Dornier, originally Dornier Metallbau rose to prominence in the 1920s and 1930s in aviation as a manufacturer of large flying boats, remarkable at the time for their all-metal construction. In 1985 Dornier became a member of the Daimler-Benz group integrating its aeronautical assets with the parent company. As part of this transaction, Lindauer Dornier GmbH was spun-off, creating a separate, family-owned firm, concentrating on textile machinery development and manufacturing. The rest of the company was divided in to several subsidiaries for defense, satellites, medtech and aircraft. The subsidiary company American Dornier Machinery Corporation is located in Charlotte, North Carolina and is responsible for customers in North and South America. Marketing, installation, personnel training and service support for textile machines as well as clip chain service for film-stretching plants are all integrated in this company. Lindauer Dornier has other locations including Pfronten, Germany; Esseratsweiler, Germany; Shanghai, China; Mumbai, India; and Istanbul, Turkey. About Commander: Commander Instruments and Avionics, Inc has been well recognized in the aviation community since its founding in 1970 providing aircraft instrument repair and overhaul services for various corporations, maintenance facilities, and private aircraft owners. In 1976 Commander’s services expanded to include aircraft electronics (avionics) when it built a service facility on the Chester Municipal Airport in Chester, South Carolina. In 1992 Commander opened a second location at the Charlotte/Douglas International Airport. The Chester, SC facility was closed in 1993 so that the company could focus on expanding component service capabilities and developing various corporate flight department support operations in the Charlotte, NC area. In 1998 Commander expanded to Savannah, GA providing commercial airline maintenance services. The Savannah service facility was closed in 2000 when a portion of the company was sold to Piedmont Hawthorne Aviation. In 2007, Commander opened a second location in Concord, NC providing services for race team flight departments allowing the Charlotte, NC facility to focus on instrument/radio/accessory component services, sales, military contracting, consulting and manufacturing R&D as its core business. According to Commander President, Jeffrey Johnson and American Dornier Executive Vice-President, Peter Brust the merger will provide clients with expanded capabilities and service of aircraft instruments and radio components and well as efficient product support utilizing American Dornier’s extensive infrastructure. It is expected that this move will greatly increase Commander’s ability to expand its operations domestically and internationally providing additional support to FBOs, maintenance facilities, and corporate flight departments worldwide in addition to supplementing American Dornier’s portfolio of services.
